Finally got my action plan written out on paper. It seemed so straightforward until I wrote it out and realized there were a few more steps than I had originally thought. I also relearned the importance of having a new set of eyes to review it.
The English chair at my school suggested a major improvement. Originally, I had thought to just look at test data and the changes in writing convention scores on the standardized tests. Then I decided to survey the teachers and see how (or if) they are implementing the writing curriculum that is supposed to be schoolwide. The English chair suggested that I ask the ninth grade teachers for writing samples from the beginning of the year so that we can compare them to end-of-the-year writing samples to look for improvement. I think that will exponentially improve this study.
Since writing in all classrooms is a critical academic need at my school this will be a major boost for our self-study and for our accreditation process in the Spring.
What exactly is SUTW? Do you have an article about it? It looks like it focuses on conventions? Could you send me an email about this? amandagripp22@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThanks!
It does focus on writing conventions. It is a way to structure writing whether it is a paragraph or an essay. It uses color and structure to help reinforce to the students how to write out their thoughts. It has been especially good for our EL students and our Special Ed students. I will send you some stuff when I get to school tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteI also made a similar change to my plan... I hadn't thought to get input and ideas from staff members, so I included that into my plan to make it more inclusive of the staff. Hopefully that will help me get some buy in from my coworkers. Your plan looks great, good luck with it!
